Mercy of the Prophet, Part 2

Here is a asan or Muwaththaq (Good or Reliable) adīth that exhibits the great mercy of the Prophet Muammad (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم). I have made another post earlier that also shows the great mercy of the Prophet (Click here).


عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي نَصْرٍ عَنْ أَبَانِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ زُرَارَةَ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع أَنَّ ثُمَامَةَ بْنَ أُثَالٍ أَسَرَتْهُ خَيْلُ النَّبِيِّ ص وَ قَدْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمْكِنِّي مِنْ ثُمَامَةَ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص إِنِّي مُخَيِّرُكَ وَاحِدَةً مِنْ ثَلَاثٍ أَقْتُلُكَ قَالَ إِذاً تَقْتُلَ عَظِيماً أَوْ أُفَادِيكَ قَالَ إِذاً تَجِدَنِي غَالِياً أَوْ أَمُنُّ عَلَيْكَ قَالَ إِذاً تَجِدَنِي شَاكِراً قَالَ فَإِنِّي قَدْ مَنَنْتُ عَلَيْكَ قَالَ فَإِنِّي أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَ أَنَّكَ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ وَ قَدْ وَ اللَّهِ عَلِمْتُ أَنَّكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ حَيْثُ رَأَيْتُكَ وَ مَا كُنْتُ لِأَشْهَدَ بِهَا وَ أَنَا فِي الْوَثَاقِ

From Zurārah from Abī Ja`far (عليه السلام) said: ‘Thumāmah bin Athāl was captured by horsemen of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم), the Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: ‘O Allāh, empower me over Thumāmah’ The Messenger of Allāh said to him (Thumāmah), I am giving you the choice to (chose) one of the three choices. (Choice 1) I can kill you. He (Thumāmah) said: ‘If you kill me, you will (have killed) a great (person). (Choice 2) I can release you for exchange of ransom. He (Thumāmah) said: ‘You will find me expensive’ (Choice 3) Or, I can set you free. He (Thumāmah) said: ‘You will find me grateful'. He (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: ‘Then I have set you free’ He said: ‘I witness that there is no God, but Allāh, and that you Muḥammad are the Messenger of Allāh. By Allāh, I knew that you were the Messenger of Allāh, when I saw you, but I did not want to testify to it when I was tied up’

Events After the Birth of the Prophet Muhammad

Here is a asan or Muwaththaq (Good or Reliable) adīth that tells in detail the events that took place right after the birth of our beloved Prophet Muammad (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم).

عَنْهُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ أَبَانٍ عَنْ أَبِي بَصِيرٍ عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ ع قَالَ لَمَّا وُلِدَ النَّبِيُّ ص جَاءَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ إِلَى مَلَإٍ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ فِيهِمْ هِشَامُ بْنُ الْمُغِيرَةِ وَ الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ الْمُغِيرَةِ وَ الْعَاصُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ وَ أَبُو وَجْزَةَ بْنُ أَبِي عَمْرِو بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ وَ عُتْبَةُ بْنُ رَبِيعَةَ فَقَالَ أَ وُلِدَ فِيكُمْ مَوْلُودٌ اللَّيْلَةَ فَقَالُوا لَا قَالَ فَوُلِدَ إِذاً بِفِلَسْطِينَ غُلَامٌ اسْمُهُ أَحْمَدُ بِهِ شَامَةٌ كَلَوْنِ الْخَزِّ الْأَدْكَنِ وَ يَكُونُ هَلَاكُ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ وَ الْيَهُودِ عَلَى يَدَيْهِ قَدْ أَخْطَأَكُمْ وَ اللَّهِ يَا مَعْشَرَ قُرَيْشٍ فَتَفَرَّقُوا وَ سَأَلُوا فَأُخْبِرُوا أَنَّهُ وُلِدَ لِعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ غُلَامٌ فَطَلَبُوا الرَّجُلَ فَلَقُوهُ فَقَالُوا إِنَّهُ قَدْ وُلِدَ فِينَا وَ اللَّهِ غُلَامٌ قَالَ قَبْلَ أَنْ أَقُولَ لَكُمْ أَوْ بَعْدَ مَا قُلْتُ لَكُمْ قَالُوا قَبْلَ أَنْ تَقُولَ لَنَا قَالَ فَانْطَلِقُوا بِنَا إِلَيْهِ حَتَّى نَنْظُرَ إِلَيْهِ فَانْطَلَقُوا حَتَّى أَتَوْا أُمَّهُ

From Abī Baṣīr from Abī Ja`far (عليه السلام) said: ‘When the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) was born, a man from the people of the Book came to a group from the Quraysh, in them were Hishām bin al-Mughīrah, al-Walīd bin al-Mughīrah, al-Āṣ bin Hishām, Abū Wajzah bin Abī `Amr bin Umayyah and `Utbah bin Rabī`ah. So he (the man from the people of the book) said: ‘Has a child been born among you at night?’ They said: ‘No’ He (the man) said: ‘Therefore a child must have been born in Palenstine, his name is Aḥmad, with him is a dark silky color mole. The destruction of the people of the book and the Jews will be by his hands, this has come to pass you up, by Allah, O gathering of Quraysh!’ They dispersed, and they asked (around), and they were told that a boy was born to `Abd Allāh bin `Abd al-Muṭalib. They searched for the man, and found him. They said: ‘By Allāh, a boy has been born among us.’ He (the man) said: ‘(Was he born) before what I said to you, or after what I said to you?’ They said: ‘Before what you said to us’. He (the man) said: ‘They must hurry to him until they see him, so they hurried until they came to his (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) mother (Āminah bint Wahab)


فَقَالُوا أَخْرِجِي ابْنَكَ حَتَّى نَنْظُرَ إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَتْ إِنَّ ابْنِي وَ اللَّهِ لَقَدْ سَقَطَ وَ مَا سَقَطَ كَمَا يَسْقُطُ الصِّبْيَانُ لَقَدِ اتَّقَى الْأَرْضَ بِيَدَيْهِ وَ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهَا ثُمَّ خَرَجَ مِنْهُ نُورٌ حَتَّى نَظَرْتُ إِلَى قُصُورِ بُصْرَى وَ سَمِعْتُ هَاتِفاً فِي الْجَوِّ يَقُولُ لَقَدْ وَلَدْتِيهِ سَيِّدَ الْأُمَّةِ فَإِذَا وَضَعْتِيهِ فَقُولِي أُعِيذُهُ بِالْوَاحِدِ مِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ حَاسِدٍ وَ سَمِّيهِ مُحَمَّداً قَالَ الرَّجُلُ فَأَخْرِجِيهِ فَأَخْرَجَتْهُ فَنَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ ثُمَّ قَلَّبَهُ وَ نَظَرَ إِلَى الشَّامَةِ بَيْنَ كَتِفَيْهِ فَخَرَّ مَغْشِيّاً عَلَيْهِ فَأَخَذُوا الْغُلَامَ فَأَدْخَلُوهُ إِلَى أُمِّهِ وَ قَالُوا بَارَكَ اللَّهُ لَكِ فِيهِ فَلَمَّا خَرَجُوا أَفَاقَ فَقَالُوا لَهُ مَا لَكَ وَيْلَكَ قَالَ ذَهَبَتْ نُبُوَّةُ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ هَذَا وَ اللَّهِ مَنْ يُبِيرُهُمْ فَفَرِحَتْ قُرَيْشٌ بِذَلِكَ فَلَمَّا رَآهُمْ قَدْ فَرِحُوا قَالَ قَدْ فَرِحْتُمْ أَمَا وَ اللَّهِ لَيَسْطُوَنَّ بِكُمْ سَطْوَةً يَتَحَدَّثُ بِهَا أَهْلُ الْمَشْرِقِ وَ الْمَغْرِبِ وَ كَانَ أَبُو سُفْيَانَ يَقُولُ يَسْطُو بِمِصْرِهِ

So they said: ‘Give me your son, so we can see him. She (Āminah) said: ‘By Allāh, my son dropped (to the ground), but he did not drop like what other children drop. When he dropped, he supported from the ground with his hand, and he raised his head to the sky and looked at it, then a light came from him until the castles of Baṣrah could see, and I heard a caller in the air say: ‘You have given birth to the master of the nation (Sayyid al-Ummah), and when place him, you must say: ‘I seek refuge by the One from every jealousy, and name him is Muḥammad’. The man said: ‘Bring him’, so she brought him (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) to him and he saw him, then he (the man) turned him (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) over and saw the mole (mark) between his shoulders, then he collapsed and (fell) unconscious. They took the child and brought him to his mother and they said: ‘May Allāh bless you with him’ .When they left, he (the man) woke up, and they said to him (the man): ‘Woe unto you, what happened to you?’ He (the man) said: ‘Prophethood has left the Banī Isrā`īl until the day of Judgment, this, by Allāh, will destroy them.’ The Quraysh were happy by this, when he saw them happy he (the man) said: ‘You are happy, by Allāh, he will rule over you and he will speak to the people of the east and the west. And Abū Sufyān said: ‘Will he rule his region?'

Allah Descends to the Lowest Heaven

Here is a asan or aī (Good or Authentic) adīth from Imām al-Riā (عليه السلام), where the narrator (Ibrāhīm bin Abī Mamūd who is trustworthy) asks the Imām about the famous adīth that “Allāh descends to the earth’s heavens (i.e. lowest heavens) on night of Friday (i.e. Jumu`ah)”. The Imām (عليه السلام) categorically denies the adīth and after that gives the tafsīr (commentary) to the adīth. This adīth shows the importance of Imāmah and having an Imām, a person who is well learned in the Prophet’s (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) adīth and Sunnah, a person who can spot mistakes in the matn of adīth.

One of the narrators is `Abd al-`Adhīm bin `Abd Allāh al-asanī, he is at minimum praised (mad) or trustworthy (thiqah), depending on the rijāl scholar. Abd al-`Adhīm al-asanī was born in the city of Madīnah on the 4th of Rabī` al-Thānī in the year 173 AH, and he died in the city of Ra’y, Iran, on the 15th of Shawwāl in the year 252 AH (other scholars say 250 and 255). Most if not all adīth scholars have taken his adīth. Ja`far al-Subānī has written a short treatise on the biography of `Abd al-`Adhīm al-asanī, which has been translated in English. Another thing to note is the tarīq (path) from al-adūq to `Abd `Adhīm al-asanī is aī (Authentic) per al-Khoei (See: al-Khoei’s Mu`jam Rijāl al-Hadīth), al-Majlisī I (See: al-Majlisī‘s I (al-Majlisī’s father) Rawah al-Mutaqqīn) and al-Majlisī II (See: al-Majlisī’s Rijāl).

A final note regarding this adīth is the last sentence Imām al-Riā (عليه السلام) said. He (عليه السلام) said, “My Father narrated that to me, from his grandfather, from his father’s from the messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)”. This shows us that the A’immah (عليهم السلام) are all connected and they ultimately receive their adīth directly from the Holy Prophet (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم).


وَ رَوَى عَبْدُ الْعَظِيمِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْحَسَنِيُّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ أَبِي مَحْمُودٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِلرِّضَا ع يَا ابْنَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ مَا تَقُولُ فِي الْحَدِيثِ الَّذِي يَرْوِيهِ النَّاسُ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص أَنَّهُ قَالَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى يَنْزِلُ فِي كُلِّ لَيْلَةِ جُمُعَةٍ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ الدُّنْيَا
فَقَالَ ع لَعَنَ اللَّهُ الْمُحَرِّفِينَ الْكَلِمَ عَنْ مَوَاضِعِهِ وَ اللَّهُ مَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ص ذَلِكَ إِنَّمَا قَالَ ع إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى يُنْزِلُ مَلَكاً إِلَى السَّمَاءِ الدُّنْيَا كُلَّ لَيْلَةٍ فِي الثُّلُثِ الْأَخِيرِ وَ لَيْلَةَ الْجُمُعَةِ فِي أَوَّلِ اللَّيْلِ فَيَأْمُرُهُ فَيُنَادِي هَلْ مِنْ سَائِلٍ فَأُعْطِيَهُ هَلْ مِنْ تَائِبٍ فَأَتُوبَ عَلَيْهِ هَلْ مِنْ مُسْتَغْفِرٍ فَأَغْفِرَ لَهُ يَا طَالِبَ الْخَيْرِ أَقْبِلْ وَ يَا طَالِبَ الشَّرِّ أَقْصِرْ
فَلَا يَزَالُ يُنَادِي بِهَذَا حَتَّى يَطْلُعَ الْفَجْرُ فَإِذَا طَلَعَ الْفَجْرُ عَادَ إِلَى مَحَلِّهِ مِنْ مَلَكُوتِ السَّمَاءِ حَدَّثَنِي بِذَلِكَ أَبِي عَنْ جَدِّي عَنْ آبَائِهِ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص
`Abd al-`Adhīm bin `Abd Allāh al-Ḥasanī (رضي الله عنه) narrated from Ibrāhīm bin Abī Maḥmūd said, I said to al-Riḍā (عليه السلام), ‘O son of the Messenger of Allāh, what do you say about the ḥadīth which the people narrate from the Messenger of Allāh, that he (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: ‘Allāh (تبارك و تعالى) descends in every night of Friday (i.e. Thursday night) to the earth’s heavens’’.

He (عليه السلام) said: ‘May Allāh curse (la`na) those who distort the words from its place, by Allāh, the Messenger of Allāh has not said that! Verily, he (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم) said: ‘Allāh (تبارك و تعالى) sends down an angel to the earth’s heavens in the last third of every night, and the first part of the night of Friday (i.e. Thursday night). And He commands him to call, ‘Are there any (who) asks, so that I can grant him?’; ‘Are there any repenters that I should forgive him?’; ‘Are there (anyone) asking for forgiveness, so I can pardon him?’ O the ones who seek good, come forward! O the ones, who seek evil, keep away!’

And he (the angel) will continue calling by this until al-Fajr. And when it is al-Fajr, he (the angel) will return to spot from kingdom of the heavens. My Father narrated that to me, from his grandfather, from his father’s from the messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم)

"When They Plot By Night"

Here is a aī (Authentic) adīth that gives the tafsīr to the Qur’ānic verse where Allāh (عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ) says “When they plot by night of words which does not please Him (i.e. Allāh)” (Sūrah al-Nisā’ (4) : verse 108). In this adīth the Imām (عليه السلام) mentions three people, “Fulān, fulān and Abū `Ubaydah al-Jarrā”. Usually in the Shī`ah adīth corpus when two fulān (i.e. so and so) is mention it usually always points to Abū Bakr and `Umar, the first two caliphs of Islām. This is the reason why al-Majlisī in his commentary of this adīth in Mirāt al-`Uqūl says the “fulān are Abū Bakr and `Umar” (See: al-Majlisī, Mir’āt al-`Uqūl, vol. 26, pg. 489).

In this adīth the primary narrator (the narrator that narrates this adīth directly from the Imām) is Sulaymān al-Ja`farī. The Sulaymān al-Ja`farī in this adīth is Sulaymān bin Ja`far bin Ibrāhīm al-Ja`farī, who is thiqah (trustworthy) per all Rijāl scholars (i.e. al-Najāshī, al-ūsī, al-Hillī, etc). I have came to know this is the Sulaymān by looking  at the narrators whom narrate from al-ussayn bin Sa`īd (the narrator who has taken the adīth from Sulaymān al-Ja`farī). There are many adīth in our books where the full name of Sulaymān bin Ja`far is given.

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِيسَى عَنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ الْجَعْفَرِيِّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا الْحَسَنِ ع يَقُولُ فِي قَوْلِ اللَّهِ تَبَارَكَ وَ تَعَالَى إِذْ يُبَيِّتُونَ ما لا يَرْضى‏ مِنَ الْقَوْلِ (النساء -: 108 -) قَالَ يَعْنِي فُلَاناً وَ فُلَاناً وَ أَبَا عُبَيْدَةَ بْنَ الْجَرَّاحِ
From Sulaymān al-Ja`farī said I heard Abā al-Ḥasan (عليه السلام) say about the words of Allāh (تبارك و تعالى), “When they plot by night of words which does not please Him” (Sūrah al-Nisā’: Verse 108) He (عليه السلام) said: ‘Meaning fulān (Abū Bakr), fulān (`Umar) and Abā `Ubaydah bin al-Jarrāḥ”

How to Cure Weakening Eyesight

Here is a aī (Authentic) adīth from Imām al-ādiq (عليه السلام) where he gives a formula on how to cure weakening eyesight. Inshā’Allāh, we can use this if and when our eyesight weakens. There are three things that must be applied to the person equally. For each thing, I have given the Wikipedia page to what it is.

مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنِ ابْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ عَنْ جَمِيلِ بْنِ صَالِحٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ع إِنَّ لَنَا فَتَاةً كَانَتْ تَرَى الْكَوْكَبَ مِثْلَ الْجَرَّةِ قَالَ نَعَمْ وَ تَرَاهُ مِثْلَ الْحُبِّ قُلْتُ إِنَّ بَصَرَهَا ضَعُفَ قَالَ اكْحُلْهَا بِالصَّبِرِ وَ الْمُرِّ وَ الْكَافُورِ أَجْزَاءً سَوَاءً قَالَ فَكَحَلْنَاهَا بِهِ فَنَفَعَهَا
From Jamīl bin Ṣāliḥ said, I said to Abī `Abd Allāh (عليه السلام), “We have a young girl, she used to see the stars like a trail (i.e. had extremely good eyesight). He (عليه السلام) said: ‘Yes, and she sees it like a grain (now)’ I said: ‘Her eyesight has become weak.’ He (عليه السلام) said: ‘Apply al-Sabr (Aloe), al-Murr (Myrrh), and Camphor to her in equal parts’ He (the narrator) said: ‘So we applied it to her, and it benefited her (i.e. her eyesight got better)’

When to Call by Kunya or Name

Here is a aī (Authentic) adīth where Imām al-Kādhim (عليه السلام) says if a person is present in your company then you should call him by his kunyah (i.e. Abū so and so, or Umm so and so), and if the person is not in your company then you call him by his name, when referring to that person.

It is customary in Arab cultures that if you do not have a child, then you make up a kunyah to be called.


مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْ مُعَمَّرِ بْنِ خَلَّادٍ عَنْ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ ع قَالَ إِذَا كَانَ الرَّجُلُ حَاضِراً فَكَنِّهِ وَ إِذَا كَانَ غَائِباً فَسَمِّهِ
From Mu`ammar bin Khalād from Abī al-Ḥasan (عليه السلام) said: “When the man is present (in your company) then call him by his kunyah, and if he is absent then call him by his name”
